It is a great honor and I appreciate the opportunity to jury the Painting and Printmaking exhibit at Cristallo Gallery. There are many excellent works to select from, which makes it difficult when many are deserving of awards. I established a set of criteria to help with my decision.

  • How well did the artist handle their chosen materials? In many instances the artist had included several pieces. Did the artwork hold together as a body of work, or would I select a single piece for the award.
  • Content: Did the artist communicate their idea or passion to me?
  • And finally, the presentation of the artwork. This includes scale, matting and framing. Did it all come together or did one element detract from the artwork?

First Place

Jan Ledbetter for "Charlie's Emperors" and "Studio Model" both in water color media. She has a great command of her materials and both artworks have dynamic compositions. In one she works in much looser style.

Second Place

James Warwick Jones for "Stern Line" in acrylic paint on canvas. In this composition Jones uses light and color to create a dynamic composition that balances between realism and abstraction.

Third Place

Jenny Windsor for her paintings "Seated Figure", Interiors/Exteriors #1", and "Interiors/Exteriors #2". They hold together well as a body of work, both in mood and media.

Award of Excellence

Cathy Hilton for "Kitty" and "Woofer" mixed media monoprints.

Janet Lynn Eggen for "On Angel's Wings" in watercolor, Beverly Furman for "Earthquake, Hurricane, Progress, War" in acrylic and mixed media on canvas, Clay McGlamory for "Sometimes Up" and "Sometimes Down" in mixed media, and Richard Stodart for "Unconditional Relaxation" in acrylic.
